What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin, custom-made porcelain shells that are bonded to the front of your teeth to improve the appearance of your smile. Veneers are an option for people who have stained, chipped, or misshapen teeth. They can also be used to fix problems such as:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Discoloration or staining
  • General tooth wear and tear

Veneers are an ideal solution for people who want to improve the appearance of their smile without undergoing extensive dental work. They are also a good option for people with sensitive teeth or gums because they require the removal of only a little tooth structure. The only part of the tooth that is removed is a small part of the natural tooth enamel to help the veneer stick to the tooth.

How Veneers Work

Durable porcelain veneers can be used on a single tooth that may have suffered a chip, crack or severe discoloration. Alternately, veneers can be used to cover all visible teeth to provide a significant upgrade in appearance. No matter how they are used, veneers are very natural-looking.

The patient can inform Dr. Seifi what they’d like their smile to look like. With her exceptional aesthetic sense and experience, Dr. Seifi will then work with the patient to select the most pleasing shape and color for their veneers.

When it’s time to order the veneers, Dr. Seifi carefully prepares the patient’s teeth for placement of the veneers. Then with the veneers in hand, she securely bonds each one to the teeth to be treated.

The payoff for both Dr. Seifi and the patient comes when she hands them a mirror and invites them to take a look at their new smile. The patient’s smile will tell her all she needs to know. It is a job well done which improves a patient’s life and increases their happiness—and Dr. Seifi’s, too.

What Is the Procedure for Getting Veneers?

The procedure for getting veneers is typically simple and straightforward.

  1. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Seifi to discuss your options and determine if veneers are right for you. During the consultation, Dr. Seifi will speak with you about the process, give you a chance to ask any questions you may have, and then you can make the decision whether or not to get veneers.
  2. If you choose to proceed, Dr. Seifi or her staff will prepare your teeth by removing a thin layer of your tooth enamel to ensure the veneers fit properly.
  3. She will then take impressions of your teeth and send the impressions to the lab to get your veneer smile shape completed.
  4. You will be given temporary veneers to wear while your permanent veneers are created.
  5. When Dr. Seifi receives your permanent veneers back from the lab, you will come back to our dental office for the fitting.
  6. The veneers will be bonded to your teeth using a special dental adhesive, giving you a beautiful new smile.
  7. You may need to come back for a follow-up appointment to make sure that the veneers are fitting properly and that there are no gaps between your teeth and the veneers.

Dental Veneer FAQ

How long do dental veneers last?

With proper care, veneers can last for many years. However, they may eventually need to be replaced due to wear and tear. Dr. Seifi can go over how to care for your veneers at your appointment, and your veneers will also be checked during your check-ups to ensure they are still in good condition.

Are veneers painful?

Patients generally only report mild discomfort during the procedure to place their veneers. You may experience some discomfort during the preparation phase, when your teeth are being prepared for the veneers. Dr. Seifi will use local anesthesia to numb your teeth and gums during this phase. You may still experience some discomfort for a few days after getting your veneers placed, but typically, patients report no discomfort after the procedure is complete.

What is the difference between porcelain and composite resin veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin shells of porcelain material that are glued to the outside of your existing teeth. Composite resin veneers are a resin that is also glued to the outside of your teeth in the same fashion. Both are great options for veneers because they can be color-matched to your teeth. However, most dentists recommend porcelain veneers for their higher quality. Dr. Seifi only offers porcelain veneers at her dental office because they are stronger, stain-resistant, and more closely resemble the shine of natural teeth.
